Payroll Manager’s Refresher Seminar: 23 January – 13 February 2012

The seminar is geared towards providing you with real world, practical information that will equip you to deal with the most common problems faced by payroll managers. It is also timed to prepare you for problems that are likely to occur in the year ahead. Seminar presenter Ron Warren is a chartered accountant and an acknowledged expert in employees’ tax and other legislation affecting payrolls. Ron designed the first computerised payroll used in South Africa and still designs payroll systems today using the latest technology.  Don’t miss this vital chance to prepare for changes to payroll systems that are coming in 2012!

About the Seminar

Ron Warren’s Payroll seminar has been a fixture on the LexisNexis calendar for over 10 years and as always the emphasis is placed on the practical effect of the changes in law.

This seminar will deal mainly with matters affecting payrolls (Income tax, UIF, COIDA, BCEA, returns to SARS) that will come into effect in the new tax year starting in March.

The seminars are timed specifically to enable those attending to ensure that adequate preparations to handle the changes have been made before the start of the new tax year, and also to ensure that potential year-end problems are brought to your attention in good time.

As always audience participation is encouraged, as the actual problems or difficulties which affect an attendee are invariably of interest to others as well. So if you have a specific question, feel free to speak out!

  • The new medical tax credit system coming into effect in March 2012 and replacing the current deduction from taxable income of capped medical aid contributions.
  • Penalties being raised by SARS for what they regard as ‘late’ PAYE payments that are actually paid in time.
  • Enhancements to the SARS e@syFile program and new tax reconciliation procedures, intended to make life easier for you but which sometimes have the opposite effect!
  • SARS ITA88 ‘garnishee orders’.
  • The new ITREG file that you can produce from your payroll and submit to SARS to obtain missing tax reference numbers, especially ‘casual’ employees.
  • The taxation of allowances paid to municipal councillors, and out of pocket expenses of ward committee members.
  • The correct treatment of insurance policies for the benefit of employees, where the premiums are paid by the employer.
  • Whether accrued leave should be included in tax directive requests on retirement or retrenchment.
  • How to calculate the VAT payable to SARS, in view of the contradictory letters issued as to how the VAT fraction is to be calculated.
  • The probable method of handling youth wage subsidies, which are likely to be introduced in early 2012.
  • The ‘virtual office’ being introduced by the UIF, and how to make the most of it.
  • Interesting queries received from readers of Payroll World magazine, and the suggested solutions.

Ron Warren is a chartered accountant and an acknowledged expert in employees’ tax and other legislation affecting payrolls. With extensive experience in the legal and practical requirements of payrolls, Ron designed the first computerised payroll used in South Africa, and has continued to do so as computer technology has advanced.  His latest design is the NuQ payroll system.

Ron is an entertaining speaker, who does his best to explain how legislation should be incorporated into payroll systems in easily understood, non-technical language.  Probable difficulties that may be experienced are highlighted in advance.  He welcomes questions from the audience during his presentations, so that their experiences can be shared with all in attendance.
