BASIC SERVICES FOR FARM TENANTS

'Zabalaza' is the isiZulu word for ‘stand firm or plant oneself firmly on the ground or refuse to give way’. It is the first name of Mr Mshengu, a centenarian who has since sadly passed away.

Mr Mshengu refused to give up the struggle for access to sufficient water, basic sanitation and collection of refuse for farm occupiers and labour tenants until he was called to rest at the age of 104.

Upon his passing, the court ordered the municipalities to ensure that the farm occupiers and labour tenants have access to basic municipal services, more specifically water, sanitation and refuse removal.
