Judge Harms obtained a BA (Law) and LLB (both cum laude) from the University of Pretoria. He practised as an advocate from 1966 to 1986, specialising in Commercial Law, Intellectual Property Law, Contract, Building and Engineering Law and Expropriation. He took silk in 1981.

Judge Harms was appointed as a Judge in 1986, and an Acting Judge of Appeal from 1991 to 1993. He served as Judge of Appeal from 1993 to 2011 and was Deputy President of the Supreme Court of Appeal from 2008 to 2011. Judge Harms is a prolific writer of books and articles, locally and overseas. He serves on a number of editorial boards, including editor of and contributor to The Law of South Africa.
