Author – Constitutional Law: Structures of Government (Lawsa Volume 7(2) – Third Edition)

Professor Freedman is a leader in the field of constitutional law. He obtained a BCom and LLB from the University of the Witwatersrand and an LLM (cum laude) from the University of Natal (now the University of KwaZulu-Natal). He has lectured at the University of KwaZulu-Natal since 2002. Professor Freedman is a prolific writer and has written dozens of peer reviewed journal articles as well as chapters in books. He is the author of Understanding the Constitution (Juta 2013) and co-author of South African Constitutional Law in Context (OUP 2014).

In addition he has been an assessor in the Pietermaritzburg High Court (2000) and a researcher in the Land Claims Court (2001). He was appointed as a constitutional law advisor to the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature (2005) and as a local government advisor to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Local Government (2006). More recently he was appointed as the Academic Leader of the Socio-Legal Studies Unit in the School of Law, University of KwaZulu-Natal (2015–2016).
