Professor Donrich Thaldar is an academic at the Law School of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban. He holds the degrees BLC, LLB and a Master’s in Political Policy Studies from the University of Pretoria, a PhD from the University of Cape Town, and a PGDip in Strategy and Innovation from the University of Oxford. His academic research interests are biolaw and in particular new reproductive technologies and the law.

Professor Thaldar also has a private law practice, where he focuses on strategic litigation in biolaw. He served as legal counsel in several landmark cases in the field of biolaw in South Africa, including South Africa’s physician-assisted dying test case (2016), South Africa’s first case of posthumous conception (2018), South Africa’s first case of gamete withdrawal from a comatose person (2020), and South Africa’s first case relating to the enforceability of a sperm donor agreement (2021).
