Jameelah Omar is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Public Law at the University of Cape Town (UCT). She holds LLB and LLM (Criminal Justice) degrees from UCT.

Ms Omar joined the UCT Law Faculty in 2015. She lectures on Criminal Procedure and Criminal Law in the LLB degree and convenes an intensive final year LLB research seminar on Criminal Justice and the Constitution. Her research focuses on criminal procedure and substantive criminal law, particularly sexual offences, protest law and remand detention.

Ms Omar has worked as a researcher at UCT’s Institute of Criminology and completed articles at Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs Incorporated in Johannesburg. As a practising attorney, she was part of the Rule of Law Programme at the Centre for Applied Legal Studies (CALS) at the University of the Witwatersrand, where she specialised in prisoners’ rights, particularly remand detainees and access to information. She was part of the Inquiry Team into systemic sexual harassment at the University of the Witwatersrand during 2013. Ms Omar has published on various aspects of criminal law and criminal procedure.
