Johan Moorcroft came to the Johannesburg Bar in 1996 from a background in industry with the emphasis on the pharmaceutical industry. His practice currently focuses, though not exclusively, on matters of a commercial nature, including insolvency law, finance, property and contracts with specific reference to restraint law.
Moorcroft is the author (with Dr M Vessio) of the LexisNexis Butterworths publication Banking Law & Practice and has contributed to the literature on trademark and patent law as well as procedural law.
He obtained his LLB degree at UNISA (in 1986) and was subsequently awarded LLM degrees at the University of Pretoria (in commercial law in 1990) and at UNISA (in intellectual property law in 2001).
He practises as a member of Group 21 at the Johannesburg Bar and is also a member of the Association of Arbitrators. He regards his involvement in Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association of South Africa: In re Ex parte President of the RSA 1999 4 SA 788 (T); 2000 2 SA 674 (CC); Slip Knot Investments 777 (Pty) Ltd v Project Law Prop (Pty) Ltd [2011] ZAGPJHC 21; Fedgroup Participation Bond Managers (Pty) Ltd v Trustee, Capital Property Trust 2015 5 SA 290 (SCA) and De Vasconcelos v Business Partners Ltd [2019] ZASCA 80 as the most interesting cases he has had the privilege to be involved with.
