After completing her BA (summa cum laude) and LLB (summa cum laude) at Rhodes University, Professor Clarke studied a Master’s degree at the University of Cambridge. She then qualified as an Attorney and Conveyancer of the High Court of South Africa.

She began her career in academia, firstly, as Senior Lecturer at UCT, and then Rhodes University, where she completed her Doctorate on Child Maintenance in South Africa.

In 2002 Professor Clark commenced her lecturing career in the United Kingdom, firstly, at the University of East Anglia for ten years, and then at Oxford Brookes as a Senior Lecturer.

In April 2019 she took up a Senior Lectureship at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, lecturing the Law of Persons and Jurisprudence, and teaching and supervising post graduate programmes on Child and Family Law. She is an Associate Professor at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal and an Honorary Visiting Researcher, Oxford Brookes University (England).

Since 1995, Professor Clark has been the General and Contributing Editor of the South African Butterworths Family Law Service.

She has published extensively, being the author of over 50 journal articles and chapters in books and the Handbook on Child Maintenance in South Africa.
