In recent years, more attention has been paid in both government and the private sector to the relationship between carbon emissions and economic growth, as well as the long-term impact of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on society.

In 2019, the South African government moved to implement the Carbon Tax Act, an integral part of its climate change response policy package under the National Climate Change Response Policy (NCCRP) of 2011, and in line with National Development Plan (NDP).

In South Africa, implementing carbon tax gives effect to the “polluter pays” principle and helps to ensure that businesses and individuals take these costs into account in their future production, consumption and investment decisions. This will assist in reducing GHG emissions and ensuring South Africa meets its NDC commitments as part of its ratification of the 2015 Paris Agreement.
